George Watkin is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and researcher working across painting, drawing, video, sound, installation, net art, speculative and critical writing. Their practice centres on a looping methodology of transformation and redistribution across mediums, applications and interfaces: output processed in the play of broken or corrupted formats as a small refusal of algorithmic enclosure and how digital interfaces shape consciousness and cognition. Core theories in the development of my practice through the DNSEP include Steyerl's Poor Image, Fisher's Hauntology, Deleuze and Guattari's Anti-Oedipus, Wark's Hacker Manifesto and Bogost's Play Anything.
The research engages contemporary consciousness under late-stage capitalism: the effects of generative AI on cognition and selfhood, surveillance infrastructure, algorithmic control, and the erosion of unmediated thought within attention economies. The resulting body of work has diversified along tangential lines; oil painting to coded net-art works that procedurally build and rebuild painterly imagery through self-authored Javascript; video works pixel-edited into corruption, narrated by fragmented, spiralling stream-of-consciousness writing; and MS Paint tapestries resembling contemporary war maps, overloaded semiotics of symbolist or futurist painting, palimpsest and digital artefact, paired with speculative tangential narratives written alongside. A background in law, education, tech and writing work underpins the cross-disciplinary approach.
